A transfer monotype is where a fully inked metal plate is delicately placed beneath a piece of print paper. Without touching the paper with one's hands(as any spot that is touched will transfer ink to the paper), the artist draws in pencil. Wherever one wants tones on the piece one can rub the area, or even scribble with the pencil. When finished, pull the paper from the plate. On the reverse side of the paper is the final print. The ink has transferred to the paper.

These are fun to do and always a surprise to see when lifting the paper. There is only one (1) "print". It is the original. On the reverse side of the print one has the original pencil drawing as well, unless two pieces of paper were used—one for the pencil drawing and one for the inked piece.

A Monotype is basically a one-off print of a painting done directly on an etching, or plexiglas plate. This is then run through an etching press and delivers one single print.

One can run a second print, called a Ghost Print, which is very much lighter than the original painting, having it's own unique qualities.
